Hala MOSiR Lublin
Lublin, Poland
Formerly: Hala Startu
It sits on Aleje Zygmuntowskie in Lublin, tucked inside the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre. Most people who come here for a match are looking for sport rather than ceremony. The hall serves as a home for local basketball and volleyball, but it does not pretend to be anything grander than a working venue.
What stands out is the parquet floor. It is not a grass pitch, and the surface is built for tighter, quicker games. Bogdanka LUK Lublin also use the space, playing in the 1. Liga for volleyball.
The building is named after Zdzisław Niedziela. He coached the local basketball team to three Polish championship bronze medals in 1965, 1979 and 1980. The hall was once known simply as Hala Startu, or Start's Hall, which tells you where the sporting tradition comes from.
There is no roof over the pitch, because there is no pitch. The hall is open to other activities, including futsal and handball, but the basketball crowd is the one that stays consistent. It is a place where the sport is played, not a destination for sightseeing.
