Itekeng Stadium

The most striking feature of Itekeng Stadium is its roof. The blue plastic chairs sit beneath these curves, facing an oval track that runs red around the perimeter of the pitch. The grass itself is green, if slightly patchy in the dry sun.

The ground was not built as a football venue. It was a gift from Debswana, the diamond mining company, completed in December 2006. Before that, the site was less certain. The structure as it stands today is what matters, though the town’s true purpose was always sport. Orapa United F.C. moved in after its formation in 2012, merging five local clubs into one side. They play their league football here and have used the advantage of a familiar pitch to reach finals. They held their nerve in the 2017–18 Mascom Top 8 Cup, winning both the quarter-final and semi-final legs at home without losing composure.

The stadium does not belong to the game alone. The council uses it for music. The "Grooving in the Ghetto" festival brought artists like Fresh and Paige to the field in 2022 and 2023. The stands were not built for a crowd of that size, but the space is available. In 2020, Orapa United lost a penalty shootout to Gaborone United in the FA Cup, a moment that was left exposed as the shots went wild. The ground has also hosted Botswana against Zambia in a friendly in 2007, one of the few times the surface saw such scrutiny. The capacity is 5,000, a number that fits the town rather than the sport. The address is on Motswere Road, but the feeling is of a place that exists for itself.
