Kigali Pele Stadium

The Kigali Pelé Stadium in the Nyamirambo district carries a name given in 2023, but the ground itself has been a fixture of the city since at least the early 1990s, when it was known as the Kigali Regional Stadium. The renovation that brought its current identity was funded by the Government of Rwanda for the structure and FIFA for the new pitch. The playing surface is artificial turf.

What distinguishes the building is the way it sits against the landscape. The sight of those empty seats in the foreground suggests a quiet moment, before the crowd arrives to fill the 22,000 spaces.

Those who manage this ground have not let the name change sit still. APR FC and Rayon Sports FC play here, along with the Rwanda national football team. The stadium also hosted events in 2016, a reminder that it is not merely a relic but a functioning part of the city's life.

There is a certain permanence to a place that has outlasted its own name. While the renovation was recent, the pitch is a modern addition to a much older site. The hills behind the stands are a constant feature, offering a view that no amount of renovation can change.
