Melina Merkouri Indoor Hall

The Melina Merkouri Indoor Hall holds its ground in the Agios Ioannis Rentis district of Piraeus. It sits on 28is Oktovriou 12.

Olympiacos SFP owns the place, named after the actress and politician Melina Mercouri. The hall serves volleyball and handball; basketball stays elsewhere, at the Peace and Friendship Stadium. The volleyball league brings teams here on weekends, and the Greek national squads have played matches on its floor, including a contest against Sweden in 2019. The cup finals have also been staged under its roof.

The seating capacity is never quite settled: some sources say 2,500, others 1,800, and one puts it at 3,000. What is certain is that the locker rooms number three, there is a medical room, a gym, a cafeteria, and a press room. The parking lot holds 65 cars, enough for a midweek fixture but not a cup final.

The building opened in 2005, according to Volleybox and the Greek Wikipedia reference, though there is another Melina Merkouri Indoor Hall in Rethymno, Crete, that opened in 1992. This one is the Olympiacos venue.
