Salle Pierre-de-Coubertin: Stadium in Maubeuge

The Salle Pierre-de-Coubertin does not announce itself with the grandeur of a cathedral.

The interior tells a different story. The renovation completed in late 2024 has transformed the space, replacing the original wooden floor with a synthetic parquet surface imported from the Paris 2024 Games. It is bright, expansive, and smells faintly of rubber and polish.

This versatility defines the hall. On weekends, it hosts the Sambre-Avesnois Handball (SAHB) team, the women's squad that plays in the French First Division. When they are not watching handball, the same mats host judo tournaments, including the international Tournoi de Maubeuge.

The building shares its name with many others across France, but the Maubeuge facility has carved out its own identity.

The facility opened in 1995, a date that places it firmly in the post-war generation of civic buildings.
