San Mamés

The San Mamés Stadium stands in Bilbao, Spain, on Calle de Rafael Moreno Pitxitxi. It is the home ground of Athletic Club. Inside, the pitch is a mix of natural grass and synthetic fibres, kept green by lights under the roof.

The current ground replaced an older stadium that had been there since 1913. The old one was demolished in 2013, and the new one was inaugurated on September 16 of that year. The work was designed by the architectural studio ACXT, led by César Azkarate, with IDOM managing the project. The total cost was €211 million, funded by public bodies like the Basque Government and the Biscay Provincial Council, as well as the club and BBK/Kutxabank. A roof extension was added in November 2016 for €12.6 million to protect fans from the rain.

The capacity is 53,331, with every seat in the house. The playing surface was cultivated in Cáceres and brought over on trucks. Because the roof limits sunlight, internal lighting modules were installed to maintain the turf growth, and in 2025 a smart sensorization system by Sener was introduced to monitor the grass conditions. The stadium hosted the second leg of the 1977 UEFA Cup Final between Athletic Bilbao and Juventus on May 18, 1977, with an attendance of 39,700; Juventus won on away goals. The ground has no official commercial sponsor name and is not renamed.
