Sporthalle Stählerwiese
Kreuztal, Germany
The hall lives up to its nickname. It is a working room for sport, not a showcase.
The ground is in the Ferndorf district of Kreuztal. The club TuS Ferndorf e.V. moved in after the club was founded in 1888, and they have played here ever since. The hall sits on Am Park. but the 2020 renovation changed the dynamic. The new stand on the south side pushed the seated capacity past nine hundred, putting the crowd closer to the action. The total number of people inside the building is often cited as 1,400, a figure that includes the standing areas that fill the gaps between the seats.
There was no official name change when the facility opened in the 1970s, nor was there one when the renovation finished. Sponsor naming is taboo in Kreuztal, so the hall keeps the geographical name of the street.
The atmosphere is the main feature. It has been called a witch's cauldron, and the description fits the match against MTV Braunschweig. The crowd packed the stands in June 2024 to watch the return leg of the promotion playoff. The game ended 27-27, but the result sent TuS Ferndorf up to the top flight. The home side closed the game out after that draw.
