The surface is artificial turf, laid down during the 2022 renovation that tightened things up ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. That work cost roughly 10 billion Rwandan Francs and brought the capacity down to 10,000, a figure the stadium reached again when Rwanda played Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifying round.

Amavubi have used this ground for friendlies and qualifiers against teams such as Senegal, Nigeria and South Africa, while Mukura Victory Sports FC call it home. After their own stadium was closed for repairs, they played their home matches elsewhere for a time, but they returned to Stade Huye once the turf was ready.

The stadium does not carry a commercial name, though many still refer to it as Stade de Butare, a name that dates back to when the city was called Butare before the 2000 rename.

Plans are in place to complete further upgrades by February 2026, but nothing is confirmed beyond that date.
