T-Mobile Arena
Las Vegas, United States
The T-Mobile Arena does not look like a fortress. A skin of glass wraps the structure, reflecting the strip and turning the building into something you might mistake for an office block until you are standing on the pavement looking up. It opened in 2016, and the concourse inside feels wider than necessary for the sport it hosts, suggesting its primary purpose was always to move a large number of people quickly rather than to create an intimate atmosphere for a hockey match.
Inside, the ice is a sharp rectangle of white, but the seating does not crowd it. The retractable system means the distance from the boards to the furthest seat can shift, yet the geometry remains fixed. You can see the rigging above, the cables that hold the lights and the scoreboard, which is a suspended block of colour. The stands are dark, and the glass walls outside make the interior feel exposed to the desert night. When the crowd is full, the noise goes up and then seems to dissipate into the open spaces above the rink.
The Golden Knights have played their home games here since the start, and the relationship has soured and mended with the seasons. They won the Stanley Cup in 2023, and the fifth game of that final series ended with a nine-goal display that kept them in it. The arena also hosts the UFC, and the atmosphere switches when the cage is set up in the centre. The capacity changes depending on whether the sport is played on ice or in a ring, but the physical structure has remained constant since opening.
There is a sense that the building is waiting for a change, as Bill Foley has proposed adding more seats and hospitality spaces, though nothing has moved yet. The exterior remains the same: a curved wall of blue-tinted glass, with the word "CENTER" visible on a side entrance and the street lights reflecting off the pavement. It is a place designed to hold twenty thousand people, but on nights when the crowd is thin, it feels larger than it needs to be.
