Viljandi Spordihoone
Viljandi, Estonia
The Viljandi Sports Hall does not sit quiet in the town centre. The old building is stone and brick, with a façade that once carried two-metre-high cement statues until local sports enthusiasts dressed them as the architect intended.
Where the two sections meet the city feels different. The old hall still holds 100 permanent seats on fold-down benches fixed to the walls, plus 40 more on a small balcony. The larger hall added in the last years of the twentieth century has 680 permanent built-in seats, though the official website for the managing centre mentions eight hundred, so anyone counting heads should leave room for error either way. The total does not matter much when the hall fills with the sound of rubber soles on wood.
It is not a single-sport venue. The day schedule rotates between handball, volleyball, indoor football and table tennis, with judo and wrestling taking their own rooms. A café sits between the changing rooms and the gym, and the saunas are tucked away where you can hear the water without seeing it.
There is no grand identity to pin on the place. It is not a temple of football, nor does it host matches that draw twice the town's population. The heat takes the sting out of it in summer, and in winter the wooden floor stays firm. That is enough.
