Zug Sporthalle

The Sporthalle Zug presents itself differently from the typical venue. It does not offer a view of the sky; instead, Bétrix & Consolascio Architekten wrapped the structure in a glass facade that looks out over the city. Steel construction supports this exterior, while a concrete basin holds the activity inside. This was not a quick build; the facility opened in 2001 after a construction period that began in 1999.

Inside, the space functions as a triple sports hall. While much of the city’s infrastructure has changed, the hall remains anchored to its primary purpose. It serves as the home venue for LK Zug, a women’s handball club founded in 1945. The seating arrangement is modest, holding 1,200 spectators for matches. This capacity is not an afterthought; it is a number confirmed by the Swiss Handball Hall of Fame. The hall also hosts Unihockeyclub Zug United and LK Zug Volleyball, though the exact surface type used for these games is not specified in available sources.

The building has seen some changes since its inception. A renovation took place between 2021 and 2022, updating the interior without altering the fundamental design. This work was necessary to prepare the venue for a specific future event. The Sporthalle Zug has been designated as one of the venues for the National Summer Games Zug 2026. This is not a permanent status; it is a booking for the near future.

The location is fixed at General-Guisan-Strasse 2 in the city centre. Public transport access is available via ZBV Bus lines 606 and 616, which stop at 'Zug Stadion'. The relationship between the city and the hall is straightforward: the city built it, and the city uses it.
