The Danish Cup, known locally as Pokalturneringen, is the national knockout ice hockey competition in Denmark. Organized by the Danish Ice Hockey Federation (Danmarks Ishockey Union), it was first played in the 1988–89 season. The tournament has undergone significant changes over the years, including periods where it was neglected and not held in several seasons such as 1989–90 and 1994–95.
Since the 2017–18 season, the format has been restructured into the "Metal Final 4," a single-elimination weekend tournament held in January. This stage features the top four teams from the Metal Ligaen, the top-tier league, after the first 16 rounds of the regular season. Lower division teams no longer participate in this final stage. The tournament consists of two semifinals and a final match.
Herning Blue Fox is the most successful club with seven titles, won in 1991, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2012, 2015, and 2023. Other notable winners include SønderjyskE Ishockey with five titles and Aalborg Pirates and Rungsted Seier Capital, each with four. The current title holder is SønderjyskE Ishockey.
The Danish Cup is distinct from the Metal Ligaen championship. The league winner is crowned Danish Champion and awarded Prince Henrik's Cup, while the Cup winner receives a separate trophy. The Cup winner does not replace the league title but is a secondary honor. Promotion and relegation between the Metal Ligaen and the 1. Division are determined by a licensing system managed by the DIU, evaluating financial and infrastructure criteria, rather than automatic sporting results.
