The Auroraliiga is the premier women’s ice hockey competition in Finland. Originally established in 1982 as the Naisten SM-sarja, the league underwent a significant transformation in 2017 when it adopted the Naisten Liiga title to professionalize the sport. In 2024, the competition received a new identity, renaming itself the Auroraliiga to align with the men’s Liiga and modernize its image. This rebranding coincided with the introduction of the Aurora Borealis Cup as the trophy awarded to the champions.
The league currently operates with nine teams, including HIFK, HPK, Ilves, KalPa, Kiekko-Espoo, Kärpät, RoKi, Team Kuortane, and TPS. The structure of the regular season adapts over time; the 2024–25 campaign featured a 32-game quadruple round-robin format. Plans are in place to expand this to a 36-game quintuple round-robin starting in the 2026–27 season. Progression to the postseason is determined by the top six teams, which advance to best-of-five quarterfinals. The semifinals and the final series are contested under best-of-seven rules.
Kiekko-Espoo stands out as the most successful club in the league’s history, having secured eighteen titles. HIFK holds the position of current champion following the 2023–24 season. The competitive structure includes a promotion and relegation mechanism involving a best-of-five series between the ninth-placed Auroraliiga team and the winner of the Naisten Mestis playoffs. While the men’s Liiga represents the top tier of men’s hockey, the Auroraliiga maintains its distinct branding and trophy, reflecting a strategic effort to promote equality and commercial visibility for the women’s game.
