Aktobe held on for a 1-0 win against Zhenis in the Premier League's twenty-fifth regular season round on Friday. The hosts have now moved to 38 points after twenty-four games, while Zhenis remain in ninth with 29 points from twenty-three matches. To be fair, the result told only half the story of a match where both sides had their moments.
And here's the thing about the first half — it was a cagey affair with plenty of yellow cards but little of substance. Nani picked up a booking for Aktobe in the eleventh minute, while A. Saulet went off the same way for Zhenis thirty minutes in. The visitors changed Saulet for something else at the break, and the tempo didn't really shift after that.
By then the match had settled into a rhythm that neither side could quite break. Aktobe kept 55 per cent of the ball and fired four shots on target, though only three of those found the net. Zhenis were sharper in front of goal with half their shots on target finding the way, but they only managed two. The statistics don't lie, even if they don't tell you everything.
The goal came when it mattered most, or at least when it mattered enough. Shushenachev found the back of the net in the eighty-first minute, and that was all the difference between two sides that had played each other to a standstill for most of the ninety. Aktobe had six corners to Zhenis's two, and eight attacks to eight more, so you wouldn't have known who was pushing harder without the scoreboard.
Both managers made changes in the final quarter, though none of them changed the outcome. Zhenis brought on three players in quick succession — Erlanov, Zharynbetov, and then Bystrov and Imnadze together — while Aktobe went for Nani and Filipovic in the closing stages. Pibe and Topalov came on late for the hosts, and Saravanja and Zarutskiy each picked up yellow cards in stoppage time.
The win keeps Aktobe within touching distance of the places above them, and it extends a decent run of form. They had lost to Irtysh 2-1 in their last outing, but before that they'd beaten Kaysar and kept a clean sheet against Alatau. Zhenis come off two wins in a row against Alatau and Kaysar, but this was a different kind of fixture — one where you needed to keep your head and wait for your chance.
