Bern were handed a 2:3 defeat by Servette in Thursday's National League clash, a result that does little to settle either side's early-season standing. The match ended with the visitors taking something back to Geneva, and by then, the scoreboard told the simple truth.
Both teams enter this fixture with an odd sort of symmetry — eleven places apart in the table, yet both sitting on zero points after their opening five and eight games respectively. The support of the fans could be called devoted, but that is an assessment, not a fact. The fact is that the club sits top of the table, and this one did not help.
Bern's recent run has not been kind. They have lost four of their last five, including a heavy 2:5 away to Fribourg-Gottéron and a narrow 2:3 at home to Ajoie. To be fair, they did manage a 4:1 win over Clotén and a 5:2 victory against Davos in between, but the pattern since has been one of chasing the game.
Servette's form has been more erratic. A 5:6 thriller with Lausanne on Sunday was followed by a 4:0 demolition of Clotén and a 2:0 shutout of Bienne. Yet they also lost 4:3 to Fribourg-Gottéron and 4:2 to Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, so the consistency is still a work in progress.
And here's the thing — with both sides still at zero points, the standings say very little. The draw brought them together early, but this result simply extends the gap in experience. Servette move into second place, while Bern remain eleventh, and neither team has yet found its rhythm.
