Csikszeredi saw off Sapientia U23 4:1 in a Romanian Cup tie on Saturday at 12:00. The hosts had been on a losing run, dropping three straight before this one, while their visitors had also tasted defeat in their last outing. By then, both sides sat level on zero points after two games each.
The result ended Sapientia U23's winless streak in the competition, though it did nothing to change the shape of the table. Csikszeredi at least picked up their first victory of the campaign, moving ahead in the standings on goal difference alone.
We had backed the home side at 78 per cent confidence before kickoff. The prediction held up, if only marginally, as the visitors failed to find the back of the net despite pushing for something.
Recent form offered little comfort for either camp. Csikszeredi had lost 3:5 to Győri and 2:5 to Steaua București in midweek, while Sapientia U23 suffered a 6:8 defeat against the same Romanian outfit on the same evening.
What this means going forward is that both teams will need to regroup quickly. One result does not define a campaign, but neither does it provide any momentum.
