France W — Japan W: 4:2, Friendly International - Women

France women beat Japan 4-2 in a friendly on 1 October 2026. The result gives the hosts momentum after a mixed run of form. Japan came in looking to build on their earlier meeting with France this winter.

France had won their last two friendlies before that loss to Germany. They took 5-1 against Norway and 2-1 over Hungary in August. Japan's recent record looked tougher, with heavy defeats to Sweden and Germany.

By then, Japan had already faced France twice in quick succession. They lost 2-3 in February but bounced back with a 3-2 win in the second match. Those results suggested they could spring a surprise.

The scoreline told its own story. France found a way back into it after Japan's earlier victory. They played the second half a man up in spirit, if not in numbers.

The result closes a chapter for both sides. France now sit on a good run after the Germany setback. Japan have opened talks about their next steps after a difficult stretch.
