Górnik Łęczna drew 3:3 with Stal Mielec in the Round of 64 of the Cup on Tuesday evening, with Górnik winning the penalty shootout to progress. The match lasted into extra time after a tight first half saw each side trade blows before the break.
B. Akhmedov opened the scoring in the 21st minute for the hosts, but J. Myszor levelled for Stal Mielec in the 54th. Górnik regained the lead just before the end of regular time when K. Odolak struck in the 90th minute plus two, only for N. Niedzwiedz to equalise three minutes later.
Extra time produced another pair of goals. Akhmedov netted his second in the 109th minute to put Górnik ahead, but S. Musiolik responded for Stal Mielec in the 111th, sending the tie to penalties.
The shootout was a tense affair. Both sides scored their first four attempts, but the tension built as misses appeared from both sides. Górnik held their nerve to edge the contest and book their place in the next round.
Górnik dominated possession at 55 per cent and registered 14 shots, five on target. Stal Mielec were more clinical with 14 attempts as well, but seven found the frame. The visitors picked up three yellow cards compared to two for the hosts.
The result means Górnik move on in the Cup after a recent run of mixed form, while Stal Mielec exit following a difficult start to their campaign with three losses in five league games.
