Kometa Brno secured their opening victory of the Extraliga season with a 3-1 win against Mountfield on Saturday evening. The result ended a winless start for the home side, who had lost both of their previous matches. Mountfield's hopes of building momentum were dashed as they dropped points away from home.
Kometa Brno entered the fixture sitting at the bottom of the table with two defeats and no points on the board. Their recent form had been difficult, including heavy losses to Trinec and disappointments against Litvinov and Olomouc. Only the 3-2 victory over Slovan Bratislava in the previous round had offered any glimmer of hope.
Mountfield arrived at the venue in seventh place with one win and one defeat from their opening two games. They had shown promise with a 5-3 victory over Dynamo Pardubice, though that was tempered by a 0-2 loss to Ceske Budejovice in their most recent outing. The visitors had also beaten Straubing Tigers 3-1 before suffering defeats to Plzen and Bremerhaven.
The match itself provided Kometa Brno with the breakthrough they needed. While Mountfield had the better position in the standings, they were unable to capitalise on their advantage. The final scoreline reflected a game where Kometa Brno took their opportunities and Mountfield failed to respond adequately.
The result means Kometa Brno finally move off zero points on the Extraliga table. Mountfield remain on zero points despite their win, a situation that will not sit comfortably with the visitors. Both teams were level on points before kick-off, but the momentum has now shifted.
Kometa Brno will take confidence from this performance after three consecutive defeats. Mountfield must now regroup after losing ground in their pursuit of a solid position. The Extraliga season is still in its early stages, but the gap between these two sides has narrowed in practical terms.
