Tölzer Löwen claimed a 2:1 victory over Füssen in the Oberliga Süd on Sunday evening, October the fourth. A result that keeps the hosts in second place while sending the visitors further adrift in sixth. And here's the thing — it wasn't the sort of game where one side dominated from start to finish.
Tölzer came into the fixture on the back of a 5:2 win over Riessersee, a result that had their confidence hovering. Füssen had shown resilience with a 1:0 victory over Hochstadt Alligators just days before, but that momentum didn't carry through. The home side took control early, pressing with purpose and refusing to let the visitors settle into any rhythm.
The opening period saw Tölzer dictate the pace, moving the puck with intent. Füssen sat deep and soaked it up, trying to contain the pressure. To be fair, the visitors weren't without opportunities, but they couldn't find the net. When the second period arrived, the game opened up slightly, and that's when Tölzer struck. A quick transition caught Füssen off guard, and the home side took the lead.
Füssen responded with urgency in the third period, throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser. They pressed high and forced errors, but Tölzer's defence held firm. By then, the home side had the game by the throat. A counter-attack sealed it, and the 2:1 scoreline reflected the final state of play. The clean-sheet run came to an end for Füssen, who had been keeping things tight in previous outings.
Looking at the table, both sides carry zero points despite five games played — a peculiar situation in the Oberliga Süd. Tölzer sit second with four wins and one defeat, while Füssen have three victories and two losses. The gap between them isn't just in the standings; it showed on the ice.
The result extends Tölzer's recent positive run, which included wins over Eigen, Heilbronner Falken and Erding before the setback against Kaufbeuren. For Füssen, it marks a setback after their victory over Hochstadt, adding to defeats against Deggendorf and Riessersee. And here's the thing — confidence matters as much as talent in this league.
We had called for a home win beforehand, placing 68 per cent confidence in the prediction. It came off, and not through sheer dominance but through efficiency when it counted. Tölzer made the moment count; Füssen couldn't quite find the finishing touch. The hosts remain in the mix, the visitors looking to rebuild.
