Karandin Slams KHL Over Video Review Chaos
Ex-referee Yuri Karandin criticized the KHL for cutting shootout rounds while officials keep halting matches for lengthy video reviews, citing a recent CSKA goal disallowed against Admiral.
KHL president Alexei Morozov had earlier proposed that shootouts to break ties could in future be held before the match rather than after it. "The winner in a draw would be decided by a series taken before the opening face-off. That would add some excitement," Morozov said.
Karandin linked that proposal to a separate change already in effect this season: the shootout has been shortened from five rounds to three, a move the league said was meant to speed up games.
The KHL later admitted the decision had been wrong.
If refereeing reviews keep drawing scrutiny of this kind, the pressure on the KHL's officiating department is unlikely to ease before the season is far advanced.
