About the player
Klaassen came through Ajax's own academy, having joined the club as an eleven-year-old, and made his senior debut in 2011. He went on to captain the side, and by the time he first left the club he had already won three Eredivisie titles as a young player, a hat-trick against NAC Breda in 2013 among the highlights of that run.
A move to Everton in 2017 was followed by a switch to Werder Bremen the following year. He returned to Ajax in 2020 and added two more league titles along with a KNVB Cup. A free transfer took him to Inter Milan in 2023, where he won the Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana, before a one-year deal brought him back to Ajax in September 2024.
Internationally, Klaassen has earned over 40 caps for the Netherlands. At the 2022 World Cup he scored in the opening match against Senegal and was later named Player of the Match against Qatar.
