Jan Oblak

Six Ricardo Zamora Trophies say more about Jan Oblak than any single match. No goalkeeper in La Liga history has won the award as many times, and four of those came in a row, between 2015–16 and 2018–19. Two further titles, in 2020–21 and 2024–25, mean the record has kept stretching years after his arrival in the Spanish capital.

He learned his trade far from Madrid. Oblak made his professional debut at NK Olimpija Ljubljana in his native Slovenia before Benfica signed him in 2010. The Portuguese years were less about first-team football than about being farmed out: loans to União de Leiria and Rio Ave gave him regular minutes, while brief spells at Beira-Mar and Olhanense passed without a single appearance. He joined Atlético Madrid in July 2014 for €16 million, a fee that made him the most expensive goalkeeper in La Liga at the time, and his career found its settled shape.

Since then he has barely left the side, passing 400 appearances for the club. The trophies have followed: the La Liga title in 2020–21, the Europa League in 2017–18, the Super Cup in 2018. The Champions League has been crueller, with defeats in two finals, in 2014 and 2016, and the Copa del Rey has produced two further runner-up finishes, in 2020 and 2024. Beyond the club game, he has been named Slovenian Footballer of the Year nine times and now captains the national team, for whom he has earned 84 caps.
