About the player
Kayla Sharples arrived at Kansas City Current in a trade for goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz and $15,000 in allocation money, and made herself a starter almost immediately. Within months of joining Kansas City she had helped the team reach the NWSL semifinals, and by 2025 she was a fixture in a defence that set a new NWSL shutout streak record of 870 minutes.
That defensive form has come to define her. She was named to the 2025 NWSL Best XI First Team and was a finalist for the league's Defender of the Year award, contributions that also helped Kansas City lift the 2025 NWSL Shield. The club re-signed her through 2027, with a mutual option for a further year.
Her path to that point ran through two loan spells abroad. At Finnish club KuPS in 2020 she made six appearances and scored once, and at Adelaide United in 2021–2022 she added 11 appearances and a goal while helping the Australian side reach its first-ever finals. Before turning professional, she started 86 consecutive games at Northwestern University, the second-longest such streak in the programme's history. Sharples has also been called into United States youth setups and senior training camps, though she has not yet won a senior cap.
