Aon Fivers Margareten

Margareten is Vienna's fifth district, and the club that carries its name has never really left it. The nickname Fivers comes straight from that district number, and the team still trains and plays in the Sporthalle Margareten, a hall that seats only 672.

The roots go back to 1919, growing out of the wider Wiener Allgemeiner Turnverein sports movement that itself dated to 1894. Fivers were Austrian championship runners-up ten times before finally taking the title in 2011, then again in 2016 and 2018. The cup record tells a different story — eight wins between 1999 and 2021 — against Vienna's other handball power, SG Westwien, whose meetings are known simply as the Wiener Derby.

Few figures are tied to the club as tightly as Michael Gangel. A right wing who spent more than sixteen years at Fivers, he built the most capped career in Austrian national team history while playing there, 150 appearances and 459 goals, and is spoken of at the club as an Urgestein.
