Ashington grew out of the colliery that gave the town its living, and for much of its early life the club drew players straight from the pits — a fact the nickname still carries. The founding date sits at 1883, though the crest on the shirts reads 1888. What followed was unlikely for a pit town of that size: Ashington became a founder member of the Third Division North in 1921, making it the northernmost club ever to sit in the Football League. That spell lasted eight seasons; they finished bottom in 1929 and were voted out. The FA Cup gave them one afternoon worth keeping — a Third Round tie in 1926–27, lost 2–0 to Nottingham Forest, sandwiched between a First Round visit from Aston Villa in 1923–24 and a Second Round meeting with Rochdale in 1950–51 that brought 13,199 through the gate, still the record.

Two men passed through before the club could offer them much of a stage. Jackie Milburn played here before Newcastle United made him a legend on Tyneside. Patrick O'Connell turned out at centre-half in the 1920s and went on to manage Barcelona, Sevilla and Real Betis. Steve Harmison took a different route back: the England fast bowler played as a defender for the club before returning to manage it between 2015 and 2017.

The Northumberland Senior Cup has been won ten times, the most recent in 2012–13, and the Northern League Cup followed in 2021–22. Ashington left the Northern Premier League after a single season in 1968, unable to meet the travel costs, and settled instead in the Northern League, where they have stayed since 1970 — a division that pits them against the same clutch of Northumberland and Durham sides year after year, with local pride rather than history doing most of the talking.
