Barton Town Old Boys

The name on the shirt only settled in 2017, and it settled during a bad run: relegation from the Northern Counties East League Premier Division had just gone through, Barton Town Old Boys were unsteady enough that another drop looked likely, and it was Ilkeston's dissolution rather than results on the pitch that kept them up. The club used the moment to shorten its name to Barton Town, closing a chapter that had opened in 1995, when the old Barton Town FC — skint, short of volunteers, unable to carry on alone — merged with Barton Old Boys, a side that had been doing rather well for itself in the Scunthorpe and District League. The new club took its nickname, the Swans, from the White Swan pub in the town, where the merger had been thrashed out.

Since then the honours have come from outside the top flight of non-league football rather than within it: the Lincolnshire League in 1996-97 (a season that also brought the Challenge Cup, a double in only their second year of existence), the Central Midlands League Supreme Division a decade later, and, more recently, the Northern Counties East League Cup in 2021-22, beaten out 3-2 in the final against Garforth Town.

The club's best-known name arrived off the pitch rather than on it: Nick Barmby later coached Barton's under-14 and under-19 sides.

Games against Bottesford Town or Winterton Rangers still get called Derby Day locally, and they're played out at Marsh Lane, a ground the original 1880 club first took up in 1927 and one the town has not seen its football team leave since.
