Matt Read went from Bemidji to nine years in the NHL. Will Zmolek signed with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2023. Both came through a programme that returned to Division I only in 1999, after decades in other divisions.

It left Division I for the NAIA in 1968 and won that year's championship. It won again in 1969, 1970 and 1971, and by 1980 it had seven NAIA titles.

Since going back up, the Beavers have played Minnesota Duluth and the University of Minnesota, and the three schools compete for the North Star Collegiate Cup. Home games are at The Sanford Center, which holds 4,300 for hockey.

The years away from the top were not all a matter of choice. The roof of the Bemidji Sports Arena collapsed in 1949, and the team went on hiatus from 1950 to 1960. Hockey came back as a varsity sport in 1962, six years before the move to the NAIA.

The Beavers began in January 1947, when Vice President John S. Glas approved a team for the 1947-48 season. That team lost its arena within two years.
