Beşiktaş U19

The academy in Istanbul that carries the eagle badge began as an extension of a much older idea: when Mehmet Şamil Şaplı founded Beşiktaş in March 1903, the football section did not arrive until 1911, and it took decades more before the club built a structured pipeline for its own juniors. Beşiktaş U19, known to supporters as Genç Kartallar, the Young Eagles, is the product of that pipeline rather than a separate creation — a squad built to keep feeding black-and-white shirts into the senior side.

Where the first team fills a stadium of over 42,000, the U19s play at İsmet İnönü Stadı, a ground that holds 800. The gap between the two venues says something about what this level of football is for: it is a proving ground, not a stage. Sergen Yalçın came through this system before becoming one of the names supporters still measure attacking players against, and Arda Turan followed a similar path before later returning to the club as a coach, a rare case of a graduate closing the loop.

The U19 side has its own history in age-group competition. It won the U19 Elite League in the 2014–15 season, then reached the final again in 2018–19 and 2021–22 without repeating the title. In the UEFA Youth League, entries in the Domestic Champions Path, most recently in 2024–25, have tested the squad against academies from outside Turkey, though the trophy itself has stayed out of reach. Derby weekends against Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray filter down to this level too, played in front of a fraction of the crowd but with the same rivalry attached.

One title in over a decade of age-group football is the return so far on a pipeline that has sent players like Yalçın all the way to 800 senior appearances and beyond.
