HAC Nuoro Women

Nuoro sits at the foot of Monte Ortobene, the historical capital of the Barbaricina, and it is that name the handball club carries as its nickname, Le Barbaricine. Handball Athletic Club Nuoro formed in 2006, picking up where Handball Club Nuorese left off, and settled into the Palestra Polivalente on Via della Resistenza.

The club has climbed rather than arrived. A first Serie B Girone Sardegna title came in 2000–01, a second in 2013–14, and in 2018–19 the Serie A2 Girone A crown sent Nuoro up into Serie A1 for the first time.

The academy has done its share of the work. Silvia Basolu came through it, captained the side, earned an Italy call-up while still at Nuoro, and after leaving for Erice was named the country's best Italian player of 2023.

Across the city plays Città del Redentore, and the derby between the two clubs had gone unplayed since the early 2000s until it was revived, with a meeting held again in January 2025. Nuoro also runs the Torneo Internazionale Città del Redentore, a friendly tournament that in 2021 brought in Dutch world champions Veerle Sleyns and Nomi In de Braekt to play in a 200-seat hall in Sardinia.
