Getting past a group stage had been the ceiling for years, so the final in 2008 mattered: a single goal against Norway settled it. A runner-up finish in 1999, behind Sweden on a round-robin table rather than a knockout defeat, came before that breakthrough; three bronze medals since, in 2004, 2011 and 2025, show the team returning to the same stage without quite repeating it.

The senior route to a World Cup has opened three times. Italy reached the group stage in Thailand in 2004 and again in Japan in 2012, then qualified for Poland in 2026 and opened with a 2–1 win over the United States, Paola Fadda and Giada Pellegrino Cimò scoring the goals.

There is no ground to call home; the squad trains at the Centro Tecnico Federale Luigi Ridolfi in Coverciano, outside Florence, and gathers elsewhere for camps and friendlies. Spain has become the fixture that defines the age group in Europe, the two sides meeting often enough at this level to be treated as the measuring stick.

Elena Linari passed through the 2012 World Cup squad and settled the argument with Brazil herself, scoring from a free-kick in that tournament.
