Kuwait City runs on the sea and on football in roughly equal measure, and the under-20 side that carries the country's blue colours has spent more than half a century as the proving ground for players who go on to wear the same shirt for the senior team. The age-group side traces back to 1971, when it beat Indonesia 1–0 in Tokyo in its first fixture, and it has kept the nickname "Al-Azraq" — the same one the senior team answers to — ever since.

Kuwait have reached the AFC U-20 Asian Cup finals eight times. They beat South Yemen 3–0 in the quarter-finals, then went out to Iran on penalties after a goalless semi-final, before drawing 2–2 with North Korea to take third place. They finished third again in 1978, and neither result has been matched since; the side has not reached the finals at all since 2012, and a World Cup appearance at this level has never come.

Home games are played at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, a 60,000-seat ground that dwarfs the crowds an under-20 fixture usually draws, but gives the team the same stage the senior side uses. Regionally, the fixture that still carries weight is against Iraq, a rivalry shaped by history and politics rather than anything settled on a scoreboard. Kuwait are due to host the WAFF U-20 Championship in 2026, a tournament that will matter more for continuity than for silverware after a run of qualifying campaigns — including a group-stage exit behind Australia and Iraq in the 2023 cycle — that has kept the side short of the finals it once reached routinely.

Of those who have passed through the side, Khaled Al-Mershed is the name attached to what the age group is meant to do: he played for the under-20s in 2018 and 2019 before moving up to the senior national team.
