Laos U20

No fixture against Cambodia or Vietnam carries a name of its own, but the meetings repeat often enough to matter: three sides from the Mekong basin, Laos among them, trade places at the bottom of one qualifying group after another, and each new draw against Thailand or its neighbours reopens the same question of whether this age group can finally get past the first round.

It has not managed it yet. Laos U20 have entered the AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers for both the 2025 and 2027 cycles and finished each attempt at the group stage, usually near the foot of the table. The team plays under the federation the senior side answers to as well, so a loss here rarely surprises anyone who follows the "Mighty Mekong Warriors" upward.

What the age group does produce, occasionally, is a player who moves on. Damoth Thongkhamsavath went from these ranks to Đông Á Thanh Hóa in Vietnam, and Phoutthavong Sangvilay signed with BG Pathum United in Thailand — both routes out of a domestic scene that otherwise keeps most of its footballers at home.

Home matches, when they come, are played at the New Laos National Stadium in Vientiane, a 25,000-seat ground the federation also uses for the senior team. The under-19s, the direct forerunners of this side, made their first appearance in international football at the 2013 AFF U19 Youth Championship — a starting point the current group has yet to build past.
