The 2010–11 FA Youth Cup final was played at Old Trafford, and Manchester United's under-19 side lifted a trophy their academy had already won more times than any other club.

The academy setup itself dates to 1938, when the club formalised youth development under the Manchester United Junior Athletic Club, decades before academies became standard across English football. The FA Youth Cup became its measure of success early: five straight titles between 1953 and 1957 established a reputation the club still leans on, and a group featuring David Beckham, the Neville brothers, Nicky Butt and Scholes won it again in 1992, players who went on to form the spine of a team that dominated English football through the 1990s.

Home matches are played at Leigh Sports Village, a ground built for 12,000 that keeps the fixtures away from the noise of Old Trafford except on the occasions, like that 2011 final, when the opponent or the stage calls for it. More recent graduates have carried the shirt into senior football rather than lingering at youth level, among them Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, while Mason Greenwood's path through the ranks ended differently.

The Under-19s enter the season chasing continental football through the UEFA Youth League, still measured against Manchester City and Liverpool academies in the derbies that shadow the senior fixtures, and still expected to produce the next name that skips the reserve stage altogether.
