Merrimack went into the 2026 Hockey East tournament as the #8 seed and left it with the trophy. The Warriors beat UConn 2-1 in the final, and goaltender Max Lundgren was named tournament MVP. The Warriors had joined the conference in 1989.

The run came three years after their only Division I appearance in the NCAA Championship game, where they lost to Boston University. In 1978 Merrimack won the NCAA Division II national championship, beating Lake Forest 12-2, and Jim Toomey was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Four ECAC 2 tournament titles were already in the cabinet by then (the first two in 1967 and 1968), and a fourth followed in 1980.

The move up came in 1984, when the team became a Division I independent. It spent five years without a conference.

The Warriors play at J. Thom Lawler Rink, which seats 2,549. Their oldest rivalry is with the UMass Lowell River Hawks, a short drive up the Merrimack Valley.

The team started out in 1948 as the Blue Blades, an informal student club. It became a varsity sport in 1956, and it has worn blue and gold since.
