«Red Eagles»
Every Red Eagles Hokkaido season carries the weight of the Paper Derby: matches against the East Hokkaido Cranes, whose predecessor club, Nippon Paper Cranes, made the fixture a proxy war between Hokkaido's two paper giants. The Red Eagles began life in 1925 as a works team for the Oji Paper Company.
Under the Oji Eagles name, the club piled up a domestic record that has no real modern equivalent: 37 All Japan Ice Hockey Championship titles and 13 Japan Ice Hockey League titles, stacked up across a run that stretched from the 1930s into the mid-1990s.
The 2021 rebrand to Red Eagles Hokkaido shed the Oji name for a regional one, though Oji Holdings kept its ownership. Since then the club has added two Japan Cups and reached the top of the Asia League three times, most recently in 2025–26.
Home games are played at the Hakucho Arena, the club's base since 1996. None of it changes what still decides a season in Tomakomai: the fixtures against the Cranes, run through paper-company rivalry since long before either club wore its current name.
