Sporting de Cabinda

Long before Angola existed as an independent country, a group of enthusiasts in Cabinda set up a branch of Lisbon's Sporting Clube de Portugal, taking on its green and white as their own.

For a stretch it played under a different name altogether, Sporting Clube Petróleos de Cabinda, after the Cabinda Gulf Oil Company took over as sponsor; it has since dropped the oil company from the name and gone back to the original.

Sporting de Cabinda has never lifted the Girabola, Angola's top division, nor the Taça de Angola. Staying there has proved harder: the club went down in 2015 and again at the end of the 2023-24 season, finishing fifteenth with only five wins. In between, in 2022, unpaid wages stretched to fourteen months and the players went on strike.

Landu Langanga kept goal there in 2018, a season before he moved on to Sagrada Esperança and, eventually, the national team.
