SSV Merten

Second place in the Mittelrheinliga in 2024/25 was the highest SSV Merten have finished in the century they had just completed. Bonner SC went up as champions; the Merten side stayed where they were, but no team from Rüttersweg had ever come that close to the top of a league at the sixth tier.

Getting there took three attempts. The club first reached the Mittelrheinliga in 2013, as runners-up in the Landesliga Mittelrhein, and went straight back down. They climbed again in 2016 and lasted until 2019. The 2024 promotion came the same way as the first — second in the Landesliga — and this time the season that followed was the good one.

The ground is artificial turf under floodlights, laid in 2009 and used ever since; the club calls it the MerKur Arena.

Among the players who have passed through is Rolf-Christel Guié-Mien, later of Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart and Olympique Marseille, and a Cameroon international.

Bornheim has two clubs with the initials SSV, and for years they were not in the same division. When SSV Bornheim 1924 came up to the Mittelrheinliga, the Football Association of Mittelrhein (FVM) made the town derby the opening fixture of the 2025/26 season, played on 29 August 2025.
