Shayne Gostisbehere was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2014 Frozen Four after Union beat Minnesota 7-4 in the national final. It also came in the third consecutive year the team won the ECAC Hockey tournament and its Whitelaw Cup, after 2012 and 2013.

Union had been in Division I for only 23 years by then. Ice hockey in Schenectady began in 1904 as a student club, and it became a varsity sport in 1923 after a gap. Play was suspended during the Second World War. From 1975 to 1990 the team competed in Division III under Ned Harkness and reached the national championship game in 1984. It moved up to Division I in 1991 and joined ECAC Hockey.

The oldest fixture is the one with RPI, for the Mayor's Cup. The first meeting was on 26 February 1904, and RPI still leads the series 57-52-12.

The team kept one home for 50 years. The Frank L. Messa Rink, also called the Achilles Center, opened in 1975, the year the Division III era began. In August 2025 the team moved to the new M&T Bank Center at Mohawk Harbor, a $55 million, 2,200-seat arena, with 25 fewer seats than the old rink.

The name changed in between. The school newspaper informally began calling the team the Dutchmen in 1933, and the college never formally endorsed it. In August 2023 the college adopted Garnet Chargers, a reference to Schenectady's history as a centre of electrical technology.

The programme's best-known scorer from the Division I years is Mike Vecchione, who reached the NHL. His 176 points are the most any Union player has scored at that level.
