The best years at USAM Nîmes Gard belong to a coach: Jean-Paul Martinet, whose side won four French championships between 1988 and 1993, with a fourth Starligue title added in 1993, and took the Coupe de France in 1985, 1986 and 1994. In 1994 that team pushed all the way to the semi-final stage of the Coupe des Clubs Champions before losing the final to FC Barcelona.

The championship years ended with the club's finances. Nîmes went into liquidation in 1994 and was relegated to the second division by administrative decision. It took until 2001 to win Division 2 and return to the top flight, and the club has since been caught out again: relegated in 2012, it came straight back up the following year. A Coupe de la Ligue win in 2007 sits as the one trophy from the years after the golden era, and a run to the round of 16 in the EHF European League in 2020–21.
