The falcon on the crest gave the club its name and its supporters their shorthand, Valsarar.
No side in the country has matched what Valur built across the decades. The men's team has taken the Icelandic championship 25 times. The women's team has been just as dominant domestically, with 20 championships stretching back to 1962.
Iceland is a small handball nation, and European silverware has come rarely to its clubs. Valur reached a continental final as far back as 1979–80, losing out to TV Grosswallstadt, and it took until 2023–24 for the men's team to go all the way, beating Olympiacos in the EHF European Cup final on away goals after the tie finished level. The women followed a season later, winning the EHF Challenge Cup in 2024–25. Matches against Fram Reykjavík carry the weight of the Reykjavík derby.
Björgvin Páll Gústavsson has worn the goalkeeper's shirt since joining in 2021.
