The stadium opened on 3 July 2009 under a different name, Kazhymukan, honouring the wrestler Kazhymukan Munaitpasov, before the city renamed it Astana Arena.

Turkish contractor Sembol Construction built the ground for $185 million. The pitch has stayed artificial throughout its history, if not the same artificial surface: the original turf was swapped in 2020 for a Limonta Sport pitch from Italy. A renovation across 2024 and 2025, costed at 15 billion tenge, brought UEFA certification.

The attendance record for a match dates to 17 November 2023, when 30,100 watched Kazakhstan play San Marino in Euro 2024 qualifying. Concerts draw more: Dimash Kudaibergen's Arnau show on 29 June 2019 pulled 40,000, and both Jennifer Lopez and the Backstreet Boys have played here.

Astana Arena hosted the opening ceremony of the 2011 Asian Winter Games and has staged Kazakhstan Cup finals, including the 2013 final between Shakhter Karagandy and Taraz.
