Bowers Stadium

Huntsville, United States

Formerly: Bearkat Stadium

Elliott T. Bowers Stadium sits on 620 Bowers Blvd in Huntsville, Texas. The ground opened in September 1986, replacing Pritchett Field after the Bearkats had played there since 1912. It has always been the home of the Sam Houston State University team, first as Bearkat Stadium before receiving its current name in honour of the university’s former president.

The pitch is covered in artificial turf, a system installed in 2016 that has proven durable through decades of games. The capacity sits at 14,000. The official record attendance, 15,134, was set just last autumn against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.

The most striking feature is the surrounding landscape.

Work is currently underway to modernise the facilities. A major renovation approved in August 2024 is set to replace the old press box with a new five-storey structure and add luxury suites. Until those plans are complete, the team must play their home fixtures away in Houston.
