Brahenkenttä

Helsinki, Finland

Formerly: Kallio Sports Field, Braheplan

Brahenkenttä sits in Alppiharju, its name unchanged since it was given for Governor-General Per Brahe, though older Helsinki still knows it as Braku or, in Swedish, Braheplan. The planning decision dates to 1921, part of a wider revision of the district's layout, and photographs from the early 1920s show the ground still unbuilt; Finnish sources place its public opening in 1926, with the dressing-room work not finished until 1931. The site began as an athletics ground, a running track ringing the pitch, before the track was removed and the field given over to football.

What sets it apart is the surface changing with the seasons: artificial turf in summer, artificial ice laid over the same footprint in winter, so the ground serves football, bandy and skating without swapping venues. Käpylän Pallo play their football here, and HIFK Bandy take over once the ice goes down. Between 2015 and 2019 the Helsinki Wolverines added American football to that rotation, a rare third code for a ground this size. Capacity runs to about 1,200, with 400 seats under a covered main stand and the rest on temporary terracing brought in as needed. The ground has never carried a sponsor's name, an unusual holdout in a city where naming rights on smaller venues tend to change hands.
