De Vechtsebanen
Utrecht, Netherlands
The facility is not simply a venue; it is the nucleus of speed skating in the region. The KNSB Royal Dutch Skating Union national headquarters occupy the complex. The 400-metre semi-covered outdoor track is the primary feature, but the building is defined by its interior hall.
The indoor ice hockey stadium sits adjacent to the track, a layout that was not standard when the complex opened in 1970. The 30x60 metre rink is used by the Utrecht Dragons, who play in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch ice hockey. The club traces its origins to 1970, coinciding with the opening of the De Vechtsebanen ice rink, though it was formally organized as the Stichting IJshockeyclub Utrecht in 1989. The team won back-to-back national championships in the 1990–91 and 1991–92 seasons. The Dragons experienced a hiatus from 2013 to 2019 due to financial issues and player shortages, before returning to the Eerste Divisie, now the Eredivisie, in 2019.
The most significant recurring sporting event at the venue was the Bavaria World Darts Trophy, a professional tournament organized by the British Darts Organisation and the World Darts Federation. It was held annually at De Vechtsebanen from 2002 to 2007. The venue has also hosted the Dommelsch Clash of the Coverbands and concerts by Golden Earring.
The track itself holds records for both men and women, including an unofficial world record for the 300-metre distance set by Gerard van Velde. The 400-metre track became semi-covered in the autumn of 1997, replacing an outdoor open-air track that was closed at that time. The facility previously had an outdoor open-air track which was closed in 1997 when the current semi-covered track opened.
