Eisarena Salzburg
Salzburg, Austria
Formerly: Salzburger Eishalle, Eisarena Volksgarten
The Eisarena Salzburg sits in the Volksgarten area, tucked into the Parsch district of Salzburg. The surface beneath the stands is artificial ice.
The space was designed in 1960 as a pure ice rink, but a later renovation added a second, covered outdoor rink and opened the doors to concerts and figure skating. It is the quiet home of EC Red Bull Salzburg. That game, decided in overtime, remains the only time a non-Austrian side claimed the title in the league, now called the ICE Hockey League.
The building does not pretend to be anything other than what it is: a place for sport in a city that has no shortage of other distractions. The capacity shifts depending on whether you are watching a match or waiting for a band to set up, a flexibility that comes from years of use. For most of its life, the arena has been a steady presence. It is not a monument, but it is a fixture, and the city knows it.
