Estádio Estadual Lourival Baptista

The hill it sits on gave the ground its address before anything else did — Ladeira da Fonte das Pedras, in the Nazaré district of Aracaju, where an older state stadium of the same name stood until the current one replaced it on the same site.

It opened on 9 July 1969 with a friendly between Brazil and a Sergipe state selection. That afternoon drew 45,058 people. The competitive record came later, on 6 February 1983, when 35,273 watched Sergipe hold São Paulo to a goalless draw in Serie A.

The name changed before the building did. Originally Estádio Estadual de Aracaju, it was renamed for Lourival Baptista, the Sergipe governor under whom it was built. Locally it answers to Batistão.

The rebuild between 2013 and 2015 began as World Cup work — the ground served as a training base for Greece — and the first plan called for 40,000 seats. That was cut back. What arrived instead was 14,500 plastic seats, new dressing rooms, new lighting and new screens, for roughly 15 million reais. It reopened on 4 February 2015 branded Arena Batistão.

Four clubs call it home — Confiança, Sergipe, Cotinguiba and Aracaju FC.
