Estadio Municipal Nicolás Chahuán Nazar

The stadium in La Calera carries the name of the man who made the local club possible: Nicolás Chahuán Nazar gathered five thousand signatures to get Unión La Calera registered as a football club, and in 1988 the ground that had simply been known as Estadio Municipal de La Calera took his name.

What stands there now bears little resemblance to what opened in 1950. In 2017 the old stadium came down entirely, and the rebuild that followed was not a patch job. Fernando Guarello De Toro and the firm INDUSTRIALDRAFT turned the pitch ninety degrees onto a north-south axis, stripped out the athletics track that used to ring the field, and swapped the natural turf for a synthetic surface. The new ground reopened in 2019.

The address is unremarkable, a corner of Calle General Esmeralda and Calle Baquedano, in a town where this ground remains the only one of its kind.
