Deportes Iquique played on a different ground before this one, the old Estadio Municipal de Cavancha, and moved out only once the current site was built. Estadio Tierra de Campeones opened in December 1993.
The full name honours Ramón Estay Saavedra. A first enlargement in 1997 lifted capacity from 9,500 toward 11,000. The bigger change arrived between 2018 and 2020, when the stadium went through a full reconstruction. Deportes Iquique shifted back to the old Cavancha venue for the duration.
The rebuilt stadium reopened on 2 February 2020, with a friendly against Everton finishing 2-2, and came out of the works holding 13,171 seats.
