Ford Field closes its doors against the weather. The Minnesota Vikings played a home fixture here in 2010 after their own roof gave way under the weight of a winter storm, a reminder that the building is designed to shut out the elements entirely. Inside, the pitch is artificial turf, laid flat and firm under the steel trusses that span the ceiling.

The seating bowls are tiered in blue. A large video board hangs above one end, flanked by smaller screens, while the Detroit Lions crest sits painted on the grass near the halfway line. The atmosphere is enclosed, the noise bounced back from the concrete and metal rather than dissipating into the sky. It was here that the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in 2006, a match watched by 68,206 people who sat through the final whistle without feeling the temperature drop.

Football is not the only sport played under this roof. The venue hosted the National Collegiate Basketball Championship in consecutive years, adjusting the seating to accommodate a wider court and a crowd that swelled to around 78,000 for the final. The wrestling stage was set here for WrestleMania 23, when an attendance of 80,103 gathered to watch the spectacle, a figure that remains the highest recorded for any event at the ground. The surface was replaced in 2023, an upgrade that gave the players a new layer of cushioning but kept the same green colour and the same white markings.

Visitors enter from Brush Street, passing beneath brickwork and glass doors that lead into the concourses. The building stands as a single unit, a place where the specifics of the day—whether it is a league match, a college final, or a concert—matter less than the fact that the game goes on, rain or shine, inside the steel ribs of the roof.
